Kalani's Story
Life
Best news: Mark Silverman and I are a married couple again. Thank God, Mark was willing to take a chance on getting involved with me and my truly "crazy" family.
I am divorced from my husband of almost 30 years, Roy. He left me for someone younger, thinner, functional, and more "desirable."
I have 3 fabulous kids ... Shawn (April 30, 1976 - Mark's and my son), Danae (December 16, 1980), and Dane (December 19, 1983).
Shawn had a bad auto accident in 2002 which left him quadriplegic. Prior to the accident, he was studying Philosophy and working toward a law degree at Dartmouth.
Danae is working on her writing (poetry, script, etc) and film-making. Danae (who is one the top KJs [Karaoke Jockey] in the Los Angeles area for several years) is married to Scott who is a Graphic Design Artist.
Dane is non-verbal autistic (Sensory Integration Dysfunction) with Congenital Immune Deficiency.
We have several dogs ... Mashugga (14 yr - Brindle "BUG" Boston Terrier/Pug who is my "retired service dog"), Chalula (7 yr old Boxer/Pug Rescue Dog), Kota (1 year old Long Haired Akita), and Vader (1 year old Rottweiler).
Surviving Malignant Breast Cancer, Ovarian/Uterine Cancer, Diabetes, and ADAD (Anxiety & Depressive Adjustment Disorder). Keeping my spirits up with love, laughter, spiritualism, and music.
School
High School was a difficult time for me. Those who knew me well ... were well aware of my strange circumstances. Since I ran away from home just before high school started, it was strange trying to go to school while staying at this friend's house or that friend's house for a few days at a tim...Expand for more
e. I still remember Mr. Feinstein (counselor) coming into our homeroom one day. He said if we had any problems we needed to talk about ... come see him. I went and told him about my circumstances. He told me what my options were, and the way I would have to start things in motion to get them resolved. I eventually became an emancipated minor, and finished high school (1 year early at 16).
I was really lucky in high school that I had such wonderfully supportive friends. They all helped me get through what could have been an assortment of horrible processes. Thanks gang ... !!! I had the benefit of being accepted by most of the groups of people that hung out in their respective clics (surfers, bikers, brains, stoners, jocks/cheerleaders, rich, poor, blacks [busing had just started], hispanics, asians, etc). I thank all of you for allowing me to be part of your "circles of friends." I think it made me more open-minded about people in general. Of course, I was such a "mutt" myself that I don't think I would have fit in anywhere had there not been a sense of enlightenment among many of the young people attending our high school at the time.
College
I have an Associate of Arts in Communication done through the Pace program from Pierce College. I have an Associate of Science in Computer Technology from Valley College. I have some additional classes towards my Bachelors from UCLA.
I always wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were unable to see it come to pass because I wasn't strong enough to organize my life and see things through.
